Job Title : Driver: Waste wood collection team member
Job location: Leeds Wood Recycling, Holbeck, Leeds, LS11 9RT
Contract : Freelance – Bank staff – Self employed
Working Hours: We operate Monday – Friday, we are looking for help particularly on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays 7.5 hours a day. 8am – 4pm
Salary : £13 p/a

Position Summary:
You would be joining our small and friendly collections team, driving with a drivers mate to local businesses and building sites to collect their waste wood. Part of the job entails identifying what wood waste can be reused and recycled and returning timber to LWR or to a waste transfer station.
The position involves working alongside all departments of LWR to support the smooth running of the enterprise, and can include delivery of products and timber to customers. The team from time to time are also involved in the denailing and housekeeping of the timber collected. You will be be in contact with volunteers from a variety of backgrounds who are looking to support their community and gain skills and employment experience.
The work has seasonal peaks and troughs and we are looking for bank staff to help us during the busy periods/ to cover sickness and holidays. Work can be physical in all weathers, and involves sharing a van with staff / volunteers. Full PPE provided.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collection of waste timber from building sites, small businesses and individual domestic homes, offering a high standard of friendly professionalism.
- Share responsibility for sorting and identifying reusable wood waste from collections, working to reduce the amount of wood that gets chipped by supporting the key aims of ‘reuse’ and ‘repurpose’ set out by Leeds Wood Recycling’s ethos
- Be a part of a team, problem solving schedule changes, liaising with clients to book in collections and generally assisting in the smooth running of the business
- Assist in delivering customer orders
- Over time, we would teach you our computer systems associated with LWR waste collection; Google calendar, Trello, Waste transfer note system and Tinit on the tablet. (Full training given)
- The collections team is responsible for keeping all paperwork and payments in good order and ensuring collections are entered into online systems each day.
- Maintaining a high level of friendly communication working as a team.
- Helping us to provide a high standard of service to all our customers.
- Ensuring that Health & Safety standards are maintained for yourself and those working with you
- Complete compulsory paperwork, Health & Safety training and ensure high standards of H&S are maintained by yourself and those working with you. This may include obtaining a CSCS card (Support given)
- Support the retail team and workshop by stacking timber in correct places ready for sale. And by, preparing timber for sale, cutting, de-nailing, pricing, when needed
- Keeping the yard /storage areas clean, tidy and in good order
- Using hand and some power tools (Full training given)
- Navigate around the West Yorkshire area (Sat Nav supplied) liaise with customers to problem-solve navigation issues.
- Support the smooth running and promotion of Leeds Wood Recycling
Personal Specification:
- Have a positive problem solving attitude is a must, as we are looking for someone who can support businesses logistics and aspirations to help people and the environment
- Full Driving licence (Maximum 3 points)
- Must be over 25 (for insurance purposes)
- Physically fit and enjoy manual work
- A positive friendly attitude
- DBS checks will be carried out upon successful application of the position – We are an inclusive employer, any convictions will be assessed on a case by case basis.
- Ability to complete Health and Safety training in order to work safely alongside LWR
- Be able to use a Sat Nat or have a strong local knowledge of Leeds and West Yorkshire
How the position fits into the organisation: Leeds Wood Recycling is a social enterprise (not-for-profit organisation) which works to divert wood waste from landfill, while offering volunteer and training opportunities to people marginalised from the job market. The wood that we sell in our shop is collected by our collections team, and comes from a range of businesses and building sites across Yorkshire. Our amazing volunteers de-nail and process the timber to make it fit for sale or to be used in our education workshops. We run workshops and upskill people to be able to make products to be sold in our shop.
